Kola nuts

Kola nuts are conker-sized, but more ragged in shape. Once broken along the seam, they reveal a perfect mauve inside, smooth and undulating. Biting in to it is a bitter experience. It might seem strange why something so tart is such a special offering-kola nuts are giving as a sign of respect to chiefs and elders, and invited to share one is an important sign of recognition. After you swallow, the aftertaste gives your mouth a moreish little buzz. It is mild stimulant and takes away hunger pains, and for anyone not allowed to drink alcohol, it comes in pretty handy.
