Gold mines

The local state comptoir (payment office) paid 3500f per gram of gold. Now administered by villagers, prices have been increased to 5500f per gram. The collected gold is passed up the chain to officials from the CBMP, the Burkinabe Office for Precious Metals, whose prices vary according to the world market rate.

Gold mines

The north of Burkina Faso is dotted with mining operations. Like the wild west more than a century ago, impromptu settlements spring up the moment there is evidence of gold in the area.
High on the sun-baked, pock-market hills, golden-hued mud spills out across the land as a men.
Women and small children work in what ever way they can to coax out enough tiny specks of gold to make it count.
