In a break with Islamic norms, six mosques fan out on the hills around the town.
Stepping over the chunky, fallen wooden beams inside the main prayer hall, it’s hard to believe it was constructed fewer than 30 years ago. Built of crumbling sand, the mosque feel hundreds of years old, and a lack of proper maintenance has weather them prematurely. The geometric patterns, towers and hillside arrangement are never impressive.
