Animism is basically a belief in spirits-both in the souls of ancestors that continue to hold an influence over the living world, and in natural forces such as the earth or air. Beliefs vary from group to group, but rituals tend to involve seeking benediction from the sprits who look after the earth, harvest and elements. These spirits can be angered by wrongdoing, including sins such as adultery, murder or suicide. They can be appeased by sacrifices, usually of chickens. For special festivals, goats, sheep, cows or even the odd camel can be put to the sword. The blood washed away the evil spilled on the earth, and the soil will remain fertile if the spirits who watch over it are happy.
